RRP Technology Development Manager

Position purpose:

The continued growth of the Reduced-Risk Products (RRP) category has forced JT Group to rebalance its priorities (New Corporate Tobacco Strategy) with the RRP category now playing a strategic complementary role to the company's conventional business, offering consumers new alternatives, and forcing JT Group to re-invent its business model and products offering.

This business environment is putting the R&D RRP Function at the forefront of a consumer electronics race, where technology, engineering and science will be essential capabilities on the battleground, in order to deliver the most satisfactory consumer experiences.

As such, the R&D Function is re-inforcing and re-organizing itself into a truly global team, with multiple engineering and scientific technical centers, supporting Product Development teams and Technology Development teams.

The Technology Development Manager is critical in executing technical developments on RRP to deliver the necessary key technologies (i.e. fast charging, novel sensors, device connectivity, etc.) to fuel the product development pipeline as well as product improvement.

The role entails developing technologies to fulfill RRP Product Portfolio needs and prepare proper project planning according to R&D Technology Development governance process.

The role requires in depth knowledge and experience of consumer electronic battery powered devices to enable technology development, as well as the ability to execute in-house multi-site development teams and negotiate technical requirements and development frameworks with external technology developers.

What will you do - responsibilities:

  • Technology Development Pipeline
  • Contribute the strategy and planning efforts to develop and manage a robust technology development pipeline, ensuring key technologies are developed to fulfill the RRP Product Portfolio needs and prepare JT Group to technologies beyond. Managing a robust technology development pipeline is a complex task requiring a combination of short and longer term projects, mature and more early-stage, incremental and breakthrough, to design the most robust and risk-mitigated technology portfolio

-
Project Execution

  • Execute technology development projects with proper development phase management according to R&D Technology Development governance process. The role entails technically reviewing the theoretical technology potential to deliver a consumer and/or business benefit, assessing any potential risks for the execution (technical feasibility, resource, budget, cost/required investment, expected timeline, competitors' activities, etc.). Close collaboration with other R&D functions and nonR&D functions (e.g. QA, SRA, IP) is expected for effective project management

-
Project initiation

  • Assess feasibility of technology ideas to determine if they have merit in supporting JTG technology strategy including risk reduction, safety/reliability, social acceptability and manufacturability and propose to initiate the project as R&D project if a benefit is identified. Ideas can be generated internally (R&D, other functions) or externally from other industries, trade fairs or competitors
  • Build and maintain relationships with external resources, e.g. 3rd party development partners, consultants, external laboratories or universities, to accelerate technology projects through assessing current internal/external capabilities

Who are we looking for - requirements:

  • Advanced degree in a related scientific discipline ( Physics, Engineering preferred) is required (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum of 4 years work experience in an electronics, battery systems, software, mechanics or biotechnology R&D environment is required
  • Experience working with aerosol generating products such as RRP (HTP, electronic cigarettes) and/or consumer electronics industry is desirable
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English (including presentations), other languages are desirable
  • Electrical engineering and/or Mechanical engineering, Technology development, Product development, Project management, Leadership
