The individual contractor will assist the Knowledge and Risk Unit with the organization of outreaching activities, communication campaigns, meetings and events to raise stakeholder awareness and support on the sustainable monitoring of Persistent Organic Pollutants for the implementation and successful completion of the GEF-funded project "Continuing Regional Support for POPs Global Monitoring Plan under the Stockholm Convention" in the Africa, GRULAC and Pacific Regions and the GEF-funded project "Implementation of POPs Global Monitoring Plan under the Stockholm Convention" in the Asia Region.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.


The overall objective of the UNEP's Industry and Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive.

It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.


The Knowledge and Risk Unit of the Chemicals and Health Branch promotes scientific approaches and knowledge for the sound management of chemicals including through implementation of UNEA resolutions.

The Knowledge and Risk Unit gathers, compiles and analyses state of the art information and data, including through monitoring activities, inventories and assessments, to allow policymakers to make informed decisions on the sound management of chemicals and waste.

The Unit executes projects and covers topics related to lead in paint, persistent organic pollutants, highly hazardous pesticides, chemicals in products, among others.

The Unit also addresses issues of concern highlighted by governments, such as antimicrobial resistance, and assists in implementing mandates received through the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) on the GCO-II, sustainable chemistry and the Sustainable Development Goals.


  • Specific tasks and responsibilities
The tasks and responsibilities of the individual contractor will be as follows:

Communication support:

  • Coordinate with internal and external partners to support the review, approval and timely dissemination of communication products including in social media platforms, media outreach and webpages, among others.
  • Develop messages and stories for various platforms to promote the voice of sustainable monitoring and sound management of POPs. Draft materials for campaigns and events for POPs related work.
  • Provide editorial support to ensure the quality and consistency of content on communication platforms.
  • Actively identify and maintain relations and partnerships with key stakeholders to support the execution of the communication campaign.
  • Evaluate results and impact of communication activities.
  • Monitor and evaluate interactions and feedback, coordinate responses on behalf of the project team when deemed appropriate in liaison with relevant divisions and branches of UNEP.
  • Evaluate results and impact of communication activities and provide guidance on the effective use of communication platforms and tools to help achieve objectives of the project.

Meeting support:

  • Assist in the preparation of global and regional meetings, including liaising with meeting participants, developing working documents, as well as other substantive and organizational issues where applicable.
  • Assist in the preparation of trainings and webinars, including liaising with participants, developing invitations, flyers and working documents, as well as other substantive and organizational issues where applicable.
  • Coordinate with internal and external partners for jointly hosted workshops and events to ensure timely exchange of information, consistent outputs and smooth execution.
  • Monitor and evaluate interactions and feedback with participants, coordinate responses on behalf of the project team when deemed appropriate in liaison with relevant colleagues of UNEP.
  • Support the organization of awareness raising events during relevant conferences and meetings where applicable.
Qualifications/special skills
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level univer
