Abbott Established Pharmaceuticals (EPD) is looking for its new


Global Therapeutic Area Lead Innovation & Development:
to be based in our Global Divisional Headquarter in Basel.


The Innovation & Development (I&D) department in charge of Value-Added Medicines; Innovation in well-established molecules which can occur in different forms - such as repurposing medicines for new indications, reformulating to achieve better treatment outcomes or combining two or more substances, or substances with digital services or devices, that can result in significant improvements in medical care".


The Global Therapeutic Area Lead within Product Design and Development (PDD) in Abbott Established Pharmaceutical Division (EPD) is responsible for delivering a pipeline of internal, external and co-developed products as part of the therapeutic category
Need State Team (NST).


The job has an agile matrix team responsibility for driving a team of multifunctional scientists that enable product launches and has responsibility to provide global support for on-going developments and products.


The job requires the management of external partners that participate in the product development, scale up and transfer into Abbott process.


This position has a significant impact on the end results for successful completion of the portfolio of projects and the bottom line of the division.


Core Job Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for the cocreation, development and codevelopment of end to end innovation briefs.
  • To input technical knowhow into the strategic category team NST to create new projects of value.
  • Responsible for the development oversight of thirdparty product developments.
  • Manages and identifies the resources required and optimize working processes to create and deliver new products with existing policies and financial constraints.
  • Directs the technology transfer "sending" process from external development partners into Abbott manufacturing sites or other operation third parties.
  • Provides product and process knowhow to operations.
  • Provides support to other therapeutic areas within global product development
  • Directs the preparation of quality documents, either internally, via codevelopment or external partners, for use in regulatory submissions.
  • Actively builds relationships with all functions, external partners and scientific bodies.
  • Provides search & selection and due diligence evaluation of external opportunities.
  • Active member of the global innovation process to help generate new product & claims with tangible benefits based on consumer insights, patients & HCP.
  • Drives the intellectual property strategy within EPD together with IP department.
  • Ensures clear communication within project teams, therapeutic area teams and senior management.
The position has no direct reports but supervises indirectly scientific staff, potential to expand to direct management.


Minimum Experience Required:


  • Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy, biological scientific discipline (e.g. biology, medicine, biotechnology). Ideally a higher degree such as a master's degree or a Ph. D in a selfmanaged research related discipline.
  • Must have experience in the relevant therapeutic area
  • Relevant demonstrated experience in a related scientific discipline showing an ability to develop others.
  • Proven records of insight drive project initiation within a minimum of requirements.
  • Proven track record of leading and managing multiple projects.
  • Knowledge of product development stage / gates processes.
  • Learning agility to understand a wide range of scientific disciplines from product to clinical development within different regulatory frameworks.
  • Ability to manage agile matrix teams of multiple functions and drive projects to completion.
  • Ability to manage project budgets.
  • Excellence communication skills. Has the ability to succinctly communicate complex scientific issues to senior leaders.
  • Ability to manage multiple external and internal relationships.
