    Job Description

    Your responsibilities

As an Electrical Engineer, within the Engineering Department (EN), you will join the EN-AA-CSE team to work on the Personnel Safety System Consolidation (PSS-CONS), whose scope is to refurbish the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Personnel Safety Systems, reaching their end-of-life after 20 years of continuous operation.

You will support the project management and engineering team on the study, execution and coordination of the replacement of the LHC audible (sirens) Evacuation System. It triggers personnel evacuation and automatic safety actions in the event of danger. The current system will be replaced by a more efficient industrial Voice Alarm safety system compliant with the applicable standards. It will include a wide range of components such as controllers' racks, loudspeakers, cables and inter-racks communication fibers.

The role includes technical and organizational tasks:

    • Identify needs and requirements from users, supporting them
    • Participate in site surveys
    • Prepare technical studies and cost estimations
    • Design engineering: design of low-voltage and very-low-voltage electrical safety systems (analogue/digital)
    • Procurement of material and services
    • Follow up of manufacture and perform Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) on the manufacturer premises
    • Participate in reception tests in the test platform on CERN site
    • Follow up of on-site works up to commissioning and handover to Operation and Maintenance teams
    • Preparation of project documents (reports, change requests, specifications, etc) and review of documents prepared by contractors/other groups
    • Budget follow up and cost analysis
    • Follow up on schedule (master planning and execution planning)
    • Development of quality plans and documents
    • Participation to project and coordination meetings

    Your profile

    Skills and/or knowledge

    • Excellent team-working attitude
    • A previous professional experience in the electrical domain and use of related CAD software packages could be considered an asset
    • Initial experience of Safety Systems and Voice Alarm
    • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage

    Eligibility criteria:

    • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
    • You have a professional background in Electrical or Electronics Engineering (or a related field) and have either:
      • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
      • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
    • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
    Additional Information

Job closing date: at 23:59 CEST.

    Job reference: EN-AA GRAP

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

    Target start date: 01-September-2024

    This position requires:

    • Work in Radiation Areas.
    • Interventions in underground installations.
    • A valid driving licence.
    • Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.

    What we offer

    • A monthly stipend ranging between 6212 and 6828 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
    • Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
    • Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.
    • 30 days of paid leave per year.
    • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.

    About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on
