External Communications Director

Position Purpose:


  • The main objective of the role is to promote a positive perception of the JTI Brand by driving the external narrative surrounding the Company and industry._
  • The External Communications Director will work closely with the wider Corporate Communications team to ensure timely, relevant and consistent message delivery to external audiences. _

What will you do-responsibilities:

Defines the External Communications strategy:
  • Assumes ownership and governance of the current corporate external channels, e.g. company websites and social media channels
  • Ensures JTI continues to enhance its reputation externally, as aligned with the wider Corporate Affairs & Communications Annual & Strategic Plan. In part measured by our ongoing Corporate brand reputation score
  • Leads communication channel performance and impact analysis, and sets relevant KPIs with a view to continuous improvement and/or adjustments
  • Seeks relevant new digital communication technologies that may better serve our needs
  • Manages the Company's reputation and crises on all external channels, globally
  • Works closely with senior management, including the csuite to help promote their individual profile externally
  • Develops and implements metrics to constantly measure and evaluate the Company's external output.

Defines the Content strategy:


  • Defines the quarterly and annual content plan that delivers on Corporate Affairs & Communications Annual & Strategic Plan, ensuring adequate cadence and coverage of key corporate priorities across all relevant channels
  • Liaises regularly with Corporate Strategy to ensure our corporate narrative reflects JTI's business strategy and key messages
  • Ensures the team is developing the corporate narrative using written and visual content to ensure we build our reputation externally
  • Develop high quality digital content, both written and visual
  • Reviews analytics and trends and adjusts accordingly
  • Collaborates closely with the other teams in Corporate Communications to identify content opportunities

Actively and fully participates as a member of the Corporate Communications Leadership Team:

  • Actively contributes to the wider team strategy to deliver an annual Corporate Communications functional plan in line with the Corporate Affairs & Communications Annual & Strategic Plan
  • Identifies opportunities to improve, streamline and enhance our operations to be a worldclass Corporate Communications function
  • Fosters crossteam and crossfunction awareness and collaboration
  • Contributes to a fun, positive and respectful working environment
  • Supports the VP or other Directors as requested/needed for special projects

Defines and manages the External Communications annual budget:

  • Secures a budget based on the annual plan for the External Communications team
  • Ensures the team is delivering to budget throughout the year, and informs whether over/under in a timely manner and in accordance with the corporate calendar/requirements
  • Prepares a business case for significant change.

People management

  • Demonstrate a high level of leadership capabilities, both behavioral and mentorship to create an environment where everyone feels included, safe to be themselves, safe to learn, safe to contribute, and safe to challenge
  • Actively coach and guide the professional development of the team

Who are we looking for - requirements:

  • University diploma ideally in communications, journalism, public relations or a related field

Outstanding, native level written and spoken English; written and spoken French is a plus

  • A confident, professional communicator with at least 10 years' experience in corporate communications
  • Experience/shows the potential for leading a team of communications professionals in a multinational organization
  • Experience working in multinational and multicultural organizations
  • Outstanding knowledge and experience across the communications spectrum of disciplines, such as communication strategy and planning, storytelling, digital channel management including social media, reputation and crisis management
  • Good knowledge of media relations
