I want to break free

I want to break free

e5abf4ef.png

Reading Fay Vietmeiers post BREAKING FREE recently, immediately an association came to my mind.
In 1984 The band Queen launched a hit with the single «I want to break free».
This song talks about someone who feels trapped in a relationship and wants to ‘break free’ of the lover. Here is some of the lyrics to show:

I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You're so self satisfied I don't need you
I've got to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free

But life still goes on
I can't get used to living without, living without
Living without you by my side
I don't want to live alone, hey
God knows, got to make it on my own

So baby can't you see
I've got to break free

Although the song was originally intended to be a male perspective of the women’s liberation movement, it was then taken on as somewhat of an anthem for one’s own personal freedom for a person who finds his/herself in a situation where he/she feels repressed and wants to ‘break free’ of his/her circumstances and to show the person that he/she really is.
Unfortunately, the song became most known by its video, all band members dressed up as women, an idea which came actually from one of the band members girlfriend and was meant as a parody to the women in the British soap series Coronation Street. The band, having done some serious, epic videos in the past, wanted to have some fun and wanted the people to know that they could still laugh at themselves.
The video became a hit, but not in the US. Some got offended by the dressing up as women and seeing the video as an empowerment to transvestites and, coupled with Freddy Mercury›s bisexuality, the video proved too controversial in the US and was even banned on MTV.

Now, Breaking free does not necessarily mean to me literally leaving everything behind. You can break free by clearing your mind, release your mind (and body, if needed), from things as stress, blockage, negativity and captivity as well. This can be done by techniques as meditation, yoga and/or by focussing on positive thoughts/things (without the «Tsjakka» feeling though ;-)).
A huge and well-known example to this personal belief, is someone who went from violent protests into captivity for many years, who kept his free spirits despite his endurance, got the courage to change his opinion on violence, got physically free eventually and even became president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela.

In her post, Fay mentions God as a formula that leads to freedom: “More of God ~ less of me”.
«
The “desire-ability” to apply the formula will result in being God-centered instead of self-centered.»

Personally, I respectfully disagree. As a historian, I am very conscious that religions, in the name of God, have in the past brought (and sometimes still do) the very opposite of freedom for many people.
Here I can't share the view of most religions that, for example, people of different sexual orientation are not accepted at all, as a way to freedom. And how can some strict religious rules be considered as a formula to freedom? In an afterlife maybe, but not on here in this earthly world.
Now, being very personal at that, I do consider «God» as being apart (or above as you like) from whatever Church or religion. Churches and religions are made by and for people, with all its flaws and good sides.
Even if I were to choose to see God as a universal, all-encompassing form of love and freedom (which I actually do), I would still be left with the dilemma of all the misery in this world: the famines, the wars and so on. How can this be a path to freedom, if God accepts all this?

I am aware that this last question will arouse even more questions or discussions. Please feel free to join this topic in a serious and respectful way, because it is not my intention to offend any religion or believes, just to share some thoughts.

Renee Iseli - Smits ... I happened upon this quote while writing about something else and am sharing it with you because it very poignant & is related to our discussion (which remains in my heart) “This world is full of trouble, umfundisi. ... Who knows it better? ... Yet you believe? Kumalo looked at him under the light of the lamp. I believe, he said, but I have learned that it is a secret. Pain and suffering, they are a secret. Kindness and love, they are a secret. But I have learned that kindness and love can pay for pain and suffering. There is my wife, and you, my friend, and these people who welcomed me, and the child who is so eager to be with us here in Ndotsheni – so in my suffering I can believe. — I have never thought that a Christian would be free of suffering, umfundisi. For our Lord suffered. And I come to believe that he suffered, not to save us from suffering, but to teach us how to bear suffering. For he knew that there is no life without suffering. Kumalo looked at his friend with joy. You are a preacher, he said.” ~ Alan Paton, Cry, the Beloved Country

Renee Iseli - Smits Yes... questions are the path to answers. My inclination is to question just about everything ;~) My son calls me the "queen of questions" to which I respond: then you must be the prince of answers (this is usually met with resistance ;~) I have learned what a gift curiosity is. I'll share these 2 great quotes: “I have no special talent. I am only passionately CURIOUS” ~ Albert Einstein “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing." Albert Einstein A concluding thought: As Vince Vitali says in that article: ... the challenge of suffering is in part a challenge of perspective, and it’s important to remember that our current perspective is not the full perspective.” Life is a journey. Faith is a journey ... much aided by growing spiritually. Life is a sowing & reaping. Sow what you want to harvest.

Fay Vietmeier you are certainly right Fay, there are indeed no easy answers to hard questions. Yet, that doesn't mean stop asking those questions, right? Thank you for this interesting discussion and I hope there will follow some more.

Renee Iseli - Smits Renee~ I do not think that there are EASY answers to HARD questions. As I mentioned earlier: When I lack answers: I always say “I don’t know the answer but I know the One who does.” ... and I trust Him. Only trust those who are trustworthy. Discernment is required. ... Who can know the mind of God? ... For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. "As "the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55) ... Who can understand His plan to redeem & restore mankind? Why it unfolds as it does. ... Why DID God create man knowing he would rebel ... disobey? Fall? Suffer? Die? (The first book in the Bible I read is Job- a rich example of suffering) Timeless lessons. ... Why did Christ have to die on the cross? https://activechristianity.org/jesus-die-cross Another thought on suffering: ... “because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” ~ Romans 5 Resources: (Book-pdf) Why Suffering? Fay Vietmeier You mention Trust, Faith, Gratitude. Well, with Gratitude I agree completely. But Trust and Faith, I struggle with. All religions, Cults and so forth are stressing to their followers to have Faith and Trust, especially when you have doubts. But, theoretically here, when someone I don't know tells me to trust or to have faith in him/her, I can't help but to get a little "suspicious". Why would I do that? And why would He allow His Son to suffer for mankind, yet allowing so much misery, war and famine among exactly that mankind? Personally, here the Bible, with all respect, doesn't help me out. You see ... lots of questions to be asked and answered ;-)

Renee Iseli - Smits (continued) Hebrews 5:7-9 "During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the One who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him ... Allow me to say that there are many unanswered questions set before humanity (even faithful believers have unanswered questions ... this is the point of faith) When I lack answers: I always say “I don’t know the answer but I know the One who does.” ... faith is what is what we cannot see ... faith is what is yet to be. 3 encouragements that help me ... when I simply don’t understand: Trust. Faith. Gratitude. Who can know the mind of God? Who can understand His plan to redeem & restore mankind? Why DID God create man knowing he would rebel ... disobey? Fall? Suffer? Die? "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55) Another thought on suffering: ... “because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. Romans 5 (I hope you read my comments to Ken & John ... some of those thoughts extend here)

Renee Iseli - Smits (my apology for the delay in answering ... I was pondering) What a deep question you ask Renee. “If God is love, how can he accept the wars, the famine and misery in the world?" You say: The Churches respond with this "it strengthens human kind" I can understand your comment: this is “not satisfying” (throughout human history answers have been offered by the greatest philosophers & thinkers ... but human opinion, at best, is still human opinion) Why does God allow human suffering? (wars, famine, misery) These conditions seem to call into question His character. As I pondered your question ... My thoughts took me to Hebrews 2 & Hebrews 5 (I really encourage reading all of those Chapters to place in better context.) Christ was “made perfect through suffering” Now I can’t fully understand this ... for Christ would seem “perfect” already - in that he committed no sin. ... “he had to be made like His brothers in every way” ... “that he might make atonement for the sins of the people ... “because He himself (Christ) suffered” Hebrews 2 10 In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered. 11 Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. 12 He says, “I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises.” 13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.” (part 1)

Fay Vietmeier Fay, again thank you for participating in this discussion. Yet, I miss your response on my question "If God is love, how can he accept the wars, the famine and misery in the world?" The Churches respond with this "it strengthens human kind", but this is not satisfying to me. How is your view on this?

@Nick Mlatchkov, your comment suggests to me that you didn't read the post properly or maybe not at all. The content of this post is not about news on Queen, but a reaction to another post with the subject breaking free (from Fay Vietmeier). Queen just features, because the song crossed my mind by responding to this other post. The topic is about Free will.

Renée 🐝 Cormier John Rylance (continued) 2) I meant to include this in my comment to John ... which I hope you’ll read Renee ... for part of your questions may be answered there Also I happened upon this post which I will read more closely again ... but it seems worthy to share https://www.bible-knowledge.com/potter-and-the-clay/ 3) In truth, there are many things not given to human understanding for God is Infinite ... we are finite 4) No loving parent wants their child to be a ROBOT. In accordance with the “bent” of our child, we endeavor to shape & influence (no parent is perfect as no child is perfect) ... for we love our children and desire that they come fully into their purpose and optimize their unique gifts ... hope they have good character ... hope find Joy in their journey ... hope they live a “rightly-ordered” life Having “free will” ... they eventually make their own decisions “God is LOVE” I am sure His plan & purpose for His children is vastly more & higher than ours I trust that God IS Love Only He can look at a human-heart and know that heart: how it is inclined ... its motives & intentions What comes after this earthly life? Who will be in eternity?

Renee Iseli - Smits Renee~ I do appreciate your “thought-full” ... well-reasoned comments/questions ... how "free" IS our free will (great question) ... should we consider “free will is being guided by our subconscious mind over which we have no control” It is written: God is Almighty, Sovereign, Omnipotent, Omnipresent, Infinite, All-Sufficient, Able God’s character is revealed by His names: ... for example, Jehovah-Rapha “God who heals” https://www.christianity.com/wiki/god/what-does-it-mean-that-god-is-jehovah-rapha.html In my post “The Fractal nature of Humanity-The hidden forces for you & against you” (are mentioned some of God’s names) https://www.bebee.com/producer/@fay-vietmeier-pennsylvania/the-fractal-state-of-humanity-the-hidden-forces-at-work-for-you-against-you (part 1)

John Rylance (part 2) I share this earlier comment to Renee in the event you did not read it: In our human journey, much is COMPLEX. You rightly ask: “And how can some strict religious rules be considered as a formula to freedom?” I share a thought from something I once heard that always stayed in my mind & heart for I believe it contains truth ... “Love God and do whatever you want” Now many would abuse this freedom. (knowingly or unknowingly) The Apostle Paul wrote much on this issue. For human nature is human nature. Supernatural transformation is required. Impossible without cooperation. God's Spirit to each spirit. I have learned: God can only do for me what I allow Him to do IN me. But the more one knows God, the more one will walk in His ways ... they will walk in His Light ... desiring to do what is right Not everyone is interested in such a journey The path is “narrow” ... Life offers many detours

John Rylance John ~ your question drives home what is written about mankind “we are fearfully & wonderfully made” Now everyone loves the “wonderful” part Few ponder the “fearful” part ... the human-heart is “self-deceived” ... man is rebellious. As parents we see this in our children (think “terrible two’s & teenagers) ... parenting should illuminate our understanding of God’s heart & patience ... affirm that He has “plans to prosper us and not to harm us” (Jeremiah 29:11) Can a CHILD tell his parents how they will be formed? “But now, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You our potter; and all we are the work of Your hand.” (Isaiah 64:8) Again, free will IS a gift We get to choose ... which way we will go ... which thoughts we will think ... which words we will speak ... the actions we will take ... the habits we will form ... the character which will define us ... the things we will love (part 1)

Fay Vietmeier As promised, here is my response to you Fay. First of all, thank you for your detailed response! I really appreciate this. I also appreciate your view, that our human journey is complex. Indeed it is and there is no hand-out guide for living/loving life. Therefore, I can understand that in past and present, humans seek guidance in religions. Unfortunately, this has also been misused. But, like you already mentioned; human nature is human nature. You also mention: "God can only do for me what I allow Him to do IN me" and "the more one knows God, the more one will walk in His ways". Truly, there are some known examples who lived their lives in God's light, even if they might have called Him otherwise ... all religions do have those shining examples. And there were and are many unknown people who also have lived or are living now their lives in God's light and give their shining example to their environment anywhere they can, often not even consciously, because it "just" seems normal and natural to them. As a matter of fact, I admire those people for being truly selfless. Raised with the image of God on a throne, deciding who goes to heaven and who goes to hell, I still find it hard to replace that image as God leading his path to Free will. I do not consider God as an image anymore, but as a deeper and higher power or feeling, which connects all human beings together. To me, Free will is indeed a gift, but, as I also responded to John Rylance's remark: how free is Free will? My view may be a bit more scientific here.

@John Rylance John, it is interesting that you raise this topic. Scientifically speaking, it is the question how "free" our free will is, because, again, according to science, a large part of what we consider free will is being guided by our subconscious mind over which we have no control, so how free is free? But I do question God's part in our free will, mainly because of what you mentioned already : An omnipotent God eliminates all semblance of free will. And this image of an omnipotent God was, in my view, mainly created by Churches to rule, or to put it more friendly: to give guidance and structure to, many people.

Free will is a gift. Fay said this in her reply to my comments on her post Breaking Free. This and Renee your citing Queen's I want to break free made me think more on Free wil. Reading up on Free Will on the Internet, I was struck by the Questioning of God' s part in our free will. This extract sums up many of the views. An omnipotent God eliminates all sembalance of free will. In a universe containing an omnipotent God all actions can only occur in accordance with the will of that God. And all actions taken by human beings are subject to that control. This statement brought to mind this from the Lord's Pray "thy will be done" Also it appears to apply to all religions. Fay #6 and Renee#5 I would be interested on your thoughts on this.

Renee Iseli - Smits Renee~ thank you for your great response. Truly. I love history and take no Umbridge to the truth you speak (appreciate your great example of Nelson Mandela) “that religions, in the name of God, have in the past brought (and sometimes still do) the very opposite of freedom for many people.” Part of my response is actually from my comment to Ken Boddie IMHO: A relationship with God is vastly different than “religion” ... “religion” is of man. Man’s attempt to reach God. Religion is historically CORRUPTED. Which is no surprise because humans are “broken” (sinful) ... and human-thinking is often corrupted. "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55) The sinful practices of men in the name of religion reflect this. People have even turned away from God because of it. But the Standard is NOT man ... rather God. God’s plan to reach man in a very personal grace-filled way ... to redeem & restore humanity is through Christ. “Jesus came from the Father full of Grace & Truth” Grace is a beautiful gift "It is for freedom that Christ set us free" Freedom is a beautiful gift (part 1)
