Biotechnology-related advances are opening-up unprecedented possibilities for progress, from personalizing medicine via keying on our individual biology, developing eco-friendly ways of building things, and helping feed an expanding global population, to sustainably producing essential chemicals and materials and advancing new solutions to complex problems like plastic pollution.
However, realizing the vast potential of an emerging bioeconomy whilst addressing complex policy questions around ethics, safety, security, and benefit-sharing requires trusted insights and collaboration across business, government, and civil society.
As part of a strategic effort to step-up biotechnology-related workstreams, the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution is recruiting a Lead, Bioeconomy.
The Lead will grow and lead an ambitious portfolio of communities and initiatives, mobilize business leaders, experts from the world's top research universities, government officials, start-up entrepreneurs, media and civil society organizations to drive strategic insights and tangible solutions.
The Lead will collaborate closely with other related centres of excellence at the World Economic Forum, such as the Health and Healthcare Platform and the Advanced Manufacturing Platform, as well as with the Forum's network of Independent Fourth Industrial Revolution Centres which build on, benefit from and contribute to the Forum's global projects and initiatives.
The Lead, Bioeconomy reports to the Head of the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and operate across multiple teams and geographies in an entrepreneurial and fast-paced environment.
Breakdown of main responsibilities:
- Generate strategic insights and foundational frameworks for business leaders and policymakers to anticipate the impact of synthetic biology and agricultural, environmental, industrial, and medical biotechnology and shape their human centred and societyserving adoption
- Build, manage and mobilize highlevel communities of experts and decision makers from across the Forum's stakeholder ecosystem (industry, government, academia, international organizations and civil society) to champion and lead ambitious, systemlevel projects and initiatives
- Champion the identification, formation and engagement of a fastgrowing biotechnology industry community in collaboration with the Forum's industry and innovator teams
- Identify opportunities for the Forum's global network of independent national and thematic Fourth Industrial Revolution Centres (C4IR Centres) to build on, benefit from and contribute to the Forum's projects and initiatives
- Scan the global horizon for highly relevant actors, initiatives and projects in the bioeconomy that can be leveraged and amplified through the Forum's network.
- Keep project and initiatives on target, timeline and budget through the effective management and leadership of teams, internal and external stakeholders, projects and processes, as well as through effective communication and reporting
- Masters (or higher) degree in public policy, management, and/or applied science, including medicine, bioengineering, bioinformatics, or computational biology
- 7+ years of experience in private or public sector, including working or consulting on relevant topics related to synthetic biology and agricultural, environmental, industrial, or medical biotechnology
- Deep knowledge of the relevant stakeholder ecosystem, including leading organizations, experts and decision makers in business, government and civil society
- Experience in crafting or shaping public policy (such as regulations, standards, guidelines or other policy tools), inside or with businesses, governments or international organizations
- Proven track record of relevant thought leadership, including published articles, presentations in international forums, and conference participations; ability to quickly develop a clear perspective on internal and external issues that have organizational impact
