Postdoc or academic associate position

80 % fixed-term until December 2024, with option of extension :The Department of Computational Linguistics conducts research and provides teaching in the domains of computational linguistics, language technology, phonetics and speech signal processing as well as digital linguistics. The "Language, Technology and Accessibility" group headed by Prof. Dr. Sarah Ebling focuses on the contribution of language technology to accessibility in the context of persons with disabilities and special educational needs.

The flagship is led by the Department of Computational Linguistics of the University of Zurich (PI: Prof. Dr. Sarah Ebling) and consists of five research partners and six implementation partners.


Your responsibilities:

The position involves work on automatic text simplification and automatic translation of audio description scripts, with a focus on multimodality (text/image).


  • Collaborate with research and industry partners in a large project
  • Supervise the researchers in two subprojects of the project
  • Conduct research throughout all phases of the project, adhering to the milestones and deliverables
  • Develop approaches to automatic text simplification, focusing on the official languages of
  • Switzerland and, additionally, Spanish and English
  • Develop approaches to audio description translation, focusing on the official languages of Switzerland
  • Present your findings at international conferences and through scientific publications

Your profile:


  • Excellent PhD degree in computational linguistics, computer science, AI, or a related discipline
  • Strong programming skills (Python)
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of machine learning (deep learning) methods, as demonstrated by familiarity with at least one major deep learning framework
  • Interest in humanassisted machine translation (including postediting)
  • Proficiency in English (oral and written). Additional German, French, and/or Italian language skills a plus.
  • Interest in audiovisual media access services
  • Affinity towards multimodal deep learning approaches
  • Interest in engaging with end user groups (e.g., persons with cognitive impairments, persons with visual impairments)
  • Very good communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
