The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low
- and middle-income countries. Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH combines research, education and services at local, national and international levels. 900 people from 80 nations work at Swiss TPH focusing on infectious and non-communicable diseases, environment, society and health as well as health systems and interventions.


The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH), within Swiss TPH, develops and applies epidemiological, statistical and mathematical methods to advance innovation, validation and applica-tion in the field of public health.

The Household Health Systems Research group is currently looking for a PhD Student in Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology (100%).


Your position

About the Research Project:


The position is linked to the "Exclusive breastfeeding: global rates, optimal duration, and a multi-country intervention" project which is funded under the Ambizione program of the Swiss National Sci-ence Foundation.

The project is done in collaboration with the University of São Paulo and the Lao Tropical and Public Health Institute.

The overall objectives of this project are to: 1) empirically assess the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding duration and child health and development; 2) create updated and comparable estimates for compliance with recommendations at national, regional and global levels; and 3) implement an innovative intervention to optimize exclusive breastfeeding in two middle-income countries with low exclusive breastfeeding rates.

Your responsibilities include:


  • Writing scientific, peerreviewed manuscripts
  • Presenting research results at local and international conferences and meetings
  • Coordinate research activities, including setting up a longitudinal randomized control trial in Brazil, leading a qualitative focus group study, developing data collection instruments, training new research staff, submitting ethical approvals, and data management
  • Data analysis for quantitative and qualitative data
  • Opportunity to train and supervise bachelors and master's students

Your profile

  • Master's degree in public health, epidemiology, social sciences, or related field
  • Experience in quantitative statistical analyses and data management preferably in R, STATA, or SAS
  • Command of English, both written and spoken
  • Ability to work selfsufficiently and as part of a research team
  • Willingness to live abroad in Brazil and Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) for at least six months
  • Interest in researching the mother, infant, and human milk triad with a global perspective

Preferred qualifications:


  • Ability to speak Portuguese

  • The salary scheme is according to SNF and is as follow (Year 1: CHF (Swiss Francs) 47'040 per annum, Year 2: CHF 48'415 per annum, Year 3: CHF 49'915 per annum)
