Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology).

Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.

PhD position in Environmental Engineering

Cities are rapidly growing and water resources are under increasing stress.

A transition towards more resilient water services and higher water efficiency is needed to ensure environmental and public health for future generations.

One option to increase water availability is the use of urban stormwater.

Urban stormwater, washed off urban areas, contains a variety of micropollutants (trace organic contaminants such as pesticides, PAHs etc.) and the risks for human health and environment is mostly unknown.

Only if the stormwater quality can be quantified, appropriate treatment and circular use options can be chosen.

The proposed project aims to develop field measurement methods (passive sampling, online sensors) that allow for a widespread assessment of organic micropollutants in urban stormwater and to quantify micropollutants removal in stormwater control measures (blue-green infrastructure, sewer systems).

Circular stormwater use and blue-green infrastructure solutions will be analysed in a model-based scenario analysis.


Responsibilities

  • Experimental design, lab work, field measurements (passive sampling, online sensors, analytical chemistry)
  • Statistical data analysis and urban catchment modelling (e.g. R, Python, SWMM)
  • Active member of our scientific team and doctoral student group
  • Conference talks
  • Write scientific publications
The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation for a duration of four years. The start is planned for March 2023. The PhD degree will be awarded by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich.

While this is a research-only position, a maximum of 10% time may be committed to teaching or supporting other activities within Eawag.

The position is based at Eawag in Dübendorf. Both Eawag and ETH are located within the Zurich metropolitan area.
