Beschreibung

The internship is located in the Secretariat to the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment (Espoo Convention) and the Protocol on Strategic Environmental Assessment (Protocol on SEA), Environment for Europe and Sustainable Development Section, Environment Division, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe based in Geneva.


UNECE Environment Division contributes to the overall objectives and mandate of UNECE as a multilateral platform facilitating greater economic integration and cooperation among its member States, and to the broad aim of the Environment subprogramme to safeguard the environment and human health, and to promote sustainable development in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by supporting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.


Responsibilities:

The intern is expected to contribute to the work of the Environment Division as follows:
Under the supervision of the Environmental Affairs Officers in the secretariat to the Espoo Convention and the Protocol on SEA, the intern will:
(a) Support the preparation, organisation, servicing and follow-up of meetings of the bodies under the Convention and the Protocol in 2023, including the Implementation Committee (31 January - 03 February) and the Bureau February) (and the preparations for the meetings of the Implementation Committee (2-5 May) and the Working Group on EIA and SEA June).
(b) Assist the secretariat in the implementation of the activities in the Treaties' workplan for ;
(c) Provide support for maintainance and updates of the Treaties' website and, as required, the internal Members' areas, prepare presentations, conduct research, and assist in preparation of outreach materials, including drafting, editing and production of printed materials.
(d) Assist in the communication with Parties and stakeholders, including drafting correspondance and tracking responses from Parties.
(e) Assist the secretariat with day-to-day tasks, as required for the implementation of work programmes of the Convention and the Protocol.

Education

To qualify for the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
For this internship, studies in environmental law, environmental studies, international relations, political studies or equivalent are required.

Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French or Russian is an asset.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
