Project Context and Scope
The intersection of migration health and environmental sustainability emphasizes the
relationship between environmental factors and the well-being of migrants, including displaced
persons. This includes addressing health challenges arising from environmental changes,
promoting sustainable practices to mitigate migration-inducing factors, and ensuring the health
and resilience of communities in the face of environmental shifts.


Organizational Department / Unit to which the Consultant is contributing:
Under the overall supervision of the Director Migration Health Division (MHD) and the direct
supervision of the Programme Officer, Health Assessment Programmes (HAP), and in close
collaboration with HAP and other MHD pillars as well as IOM's Environmental Sustainability
Unit, the Consultant - Migration Health (Environment Sustainability) will assist MHD in reaching
and maintaining the highest possible level of environmental sustainability in its programmes,
facilities, and operations.


_ Core Functions / Responsibilities:
_


Tasks to be performed under this contract

  • Support developing and implementing strategies, technical guidance, operational practices
and standard assessment tools to promote environmental sustainability within migration health
programmes, including in crisis and low resource settings.


  • Collaborate with IOM's MHD and Environmental Sustainability Unit and USRAP teams to
address health challenges linked to migration and displacement and environmental influences
and vice-versa.


  • Support data collection processes to inform evidence-based interventions at the intersection
of migration health and environmental sustainability and to guide public health measures to
manage health risks associated with migration and displacement in an environmentally
responsible manner.


  • Conduct field visits and assessments to identify challenges, best practices, and areas for
improvement as required.


  • Routinely monitor and analyze environmental conditions affecting migrant and displaced
communities, including internal and external early warning and risk indices, and propose
measures for sustainable and health-conscious practices that align migration health
programmes with environmental sustainability goals.


  • Support developing initiatives to avoid/minimize the risks and impacts of MHD's facility and
community-based interventions to community health, safety, and security.


  • Foster collaboration with international organizations, private sector, community-based
organizations, research institutions, and NGOs to enhance knowledge-sharing and best
practices.


  • Support the coordination with other departments within IOM especially on issues related to
environmental sustainability and health programming.


  • Support the development and implementation of training programmes for healthcare
professionals and community workers, emphasizing the integration of migration health and
environmental considerations.


  • Prepare regular reports detailing the progress, challenges, and recommendations for
improvement in migration health and environmental sustainability initiatives.


  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Performance indicators for evaluation of results

  • Field visits to healthcare facilities are conducted to perform assessments identifying key
challenges, best practices, and areas for improvement in migration health and environmental
sustainability.

  • Data collection is conducted to inform evidencebased interventions guiding public health
measures related to migration health and environmental sustainability.

  • MHD strategies on environmental sustainability are developed. Technical guidance,
operational practices, and standard assessment tools are developed based on these strategies.

  • A training program for healthcare professionals and community health workers integrating
migration health and environmental sustainability is developed.

  • Collaborative initiatives are undertaken with IOM's MHD, Environmental Sustainability Unit,
USRAP teams, and other stakeholders.

  • Quarterly reports on environmental sustainability are prepared.
