Postdoctoral Researcher in Earthquake Seismology:

100%, Zurich, fixed-term:

We are looking for an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to study and model earthquake processes and seismic hazards with very high frequency seismic wavefields.

The position is part of a joint project with the Institute of Geophysics of ETH Zurich, the Swiss Seismological Service (SED), and the Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC).

Project background:

Earthquakes are among the deadliest natural hazards humanity is confronted with, and seismic risk is a major obstacle for the development of deep geothermal power plants, needed for a clean energy transition.

To advance the understanding of seismogenic processes and seismic hazards, we need to understand and be able to model the full range of frequencies in the natural seismic wavefield.

For this reason, ETH Zurich is involved in earthquake observatories at a wide range of scales:
from regional and national observatories to geothermal reservoirs (e.g. Utah FORGE) and to in-situ experiments in deep underground laboratories (e.g. the BedrettoLab).

At facilities like the _Bedretto Underground Laboratory for Geophysics and Geoenergies,_ we can observe earthquake processes from unusually close distances, directly on natural fault zones, where high frequency waves have not yet been attenuated.

To interpret these unique short-distance observations, we model very high frequency seismic wavefields (>>100Hz) using high-performance computing (HPC) and deep learning (DL) methods.

Together, the models and observations provide an unusually detailed perspective on how wavefield observations relate to earthquake source processes, bulk and fault zone structures, as well as site effects.

Job description:

In this context, we are searching for a postdoctoral researcher who will work on modelling and studying very high frequency seismic wavefields, and the small-scale processes that cause and affect them.

Depending on your background and interest, you will be working on:

- designing simulations of very high frequency wavefields with generative DL models and deterministic HPC computations
- studying the propagation and properties of observed and simulated wavefields, including source, structure, and site effects

  • DLbased characterisation of seismicity and finite size ruptures using data from nearfault monitoring networks
- earthquake source physics inferred by the very high frequency seismic wavefields
- seismic hazard analysis for engineering implications in crucial infrastructure

You will be working in a team with a senior data scientist from the SDSC and three senior seismologists from ETH Zurich.

The position is funded for a total duration of two years, and can possibly be extended. It should preferably be filled between September - November 2023

Your profile:

We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher with a:

  • PhD (completed or to be completed soon) in seismology, geophysics, physics, mathematics or similar
  • Strong interest in earthquake seismology, and a knack for numerical, computational and machine learning methods.
  • Prior programming experience in numerical modelling of wave propagation and/or machine learning, HPC and GPU processing is considered beneficial.

Beyond technical competencies we are looking for a team player who is happy to work in a diverse team and with enthusiasm to communicate science across domain boundaries.

We offer:

ETH Zurich is a family-friendly employer with excellent working conditions. You can look forward to an exciting working environment, cultural diversity and attractive offers and benefits.

We value diversity:

In line with our values, ETH Zurich encourages an inclusive culture.
