PhD Positions at Institute of Electromagnetic Fields on Optical and THz Communication:

100%, Zurich, fixed-term:

The Institute of Electromagnetic Fields (IEF) is a research group in the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (D-ITET) at ETH Zurich and led by Prof.

Dr Juerg Leuthold.

We are interested in component design, nanofabrication, and system testing of novel technologies for optical and THz communication. Our main goal is to provide faster and more compact solutions while reducing energy consumption. Our focus to achieve this goal lies on the plasmonic technology and on its integration on chip.

We are looking for creative and highly motivated researchers to join our team.

Apart from actively performing research, PhD positions at the IEF include international collaborations with academia and industry, mentoring BSc and MSc students, and teaching activities in the areas of optics & photonics, optical communication, electrical engineering, and theory & modelling of electromagnetic waves.

Job description:

These PhD positions are created to reinforce the group on the development of plasmonic components and their integration in photonic circuits towards the next generation of high-speed transceivers for optical and THz communication.

Additionally, you are contributing to the development of a plasmonic platform that joins state-of-the-art components to enable advanced functionalities.

Besides your research activity, you are expected to study towards the doctoral degree and participate in our teaching activities.

This PhD position is fully funded with a competitive salary according to ETH guidelines. Applications will be considered until the position is filled.

Your profile:

  • A relevant MSc degree (e.g., in electrical or material engineering) with an excellent academic track record
  • Solid background in photonics or material processing
  • Strong interest for photonic integrated circuits, electrooptic materials and optical communication
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Enjoying to work on international research projects
  • Ability to work independently
