OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME:


The mission of WHO's Health Emergencies Programme (The Programme) is to build the capacity of Member States to manage health emergency risks and, when national capacities are overwhelmed, to lead and coordinate the international health response to contain outbreaks and to provide effective relief and recovery to affected populations.

The WHE Response division (WRE) is responsible for rapidly detecting and responding to health emergencies while leveraging relevant national and international partnerships, ensuring that emergency-affected populations in acute and protracted emergencies have access to essential health services and that systems are maintained and strengthened in fragile, conflict and vulnerable settings while implementing at scale, proven prevention strategies for priority pandemic/epidemic-prone diseases.

The Alert and Response Coordination Department (ARC) is responsible to provide end-to-end capacity for the detection, management, coordination and monitoring of acute public health emergencies, as well as the generation and dissemination of public health information around such events.

It identifies potential acute events through early warning, provides risk assessment of such events, and delivers on the management, coordination and ongoing monitoring of acute events that require activation of an incident management structure at HQ.

These include epidemics and acute humanitarian emergencies.


DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:


  • Under the guidance of the Unit Head, the incumbent will perform the following duties:
  • Produce epidemiological analyses in response to acute events, including data management, descriptive and advanced analysis of epidemiological data, automation of analyses, appropriate visualizations of key epidemiological outputs and real-time analysis of epidemic trends, including nowcasting and short-term forecasting.
  • Undertake indepth statistical analyses or scenario analysis to support guidance, development and policy.

  • Undertake field missions in response to epidemics or acute humanitarian emergencies, as appropriate.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


Education:


Essential:
A first level university degree in epidemiology, mathematics, statistics, data science, public health or related discipline.

Desirable:
A PhD in one of the above mentioned areas.


Experience:


Essential:

At least 5 years of experience working in data science, mathematical modelling or statistics, including experience in epidemic response.


Desirable:
Relevant international experience in the areas of outbreak investigation and response for emerging and re-emerging diseases.


Skills:


  • Demonstrated knowledge, competency and professional skills on the public health aspects of infectious disease control, epidemic preparedness and response.
  • Demonstrated expertise in epidemiology and data science in the context epidemics and other acute public health events and health emergencies.
  • Demonstrated expertise in quantitative methods,statistical analysis and data management, particularly in the context epidemics and other acute public health events and health emergencies.
  • Experience in infectious disease forecasting Proficiency in R software for data management and analysis.
  • Being proactive, flexible, resourceful and able to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
