PhD postion

100 % :

For the SNF project "Linking human and animal welfare - refining rodent euthanasia" we offer a PhD position for three years.

This project is part of the NRP 79 "Advancing 3R". The aim of this project is a) to improve the welfare of rodents during euthanasia by gaining knowledge about the relationship between animal-related indicators and human attitudes, and b) to develop and implement appropriate intervention strategies to improve the welfare of both laboratory animals and laboratory personnel. The project is led by PD Sonja Hartnack (UZH) in collaboration with Dr. Petra Seebeck (UZH), Dr. Philippe Bugnon (UZH) and Prof. Irina Guseva-Canu (Unisanté Lausanne).


Your responsibilities:


  • Manage project activities related to a longitudinal intervention study to circumvent moral distress, a perception bias study and a rodent welfare study
  • Participate in UZH PhD program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Your profile:


  • Interest in working both quantitatively and qualitatively
  • Interest in health of laboratory animals and humans
  • A degree in either (i) veterinary medicine, (ii) psychology or (iii) biology
  • Eligible for a PhD program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Life Science Zurich Graduate School
  • Experience with R is an asset
  • Fluent in English, German is an advantage
  • Strong planning and organisational skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication and effective interprofessional skills
  • Selfmotivated and comfortable taking initiative
