Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.

Research Scientist Torrent Processes % (f/m/d)


You will investigate the mobilization, transport and deposition of bedload and large wood during floods in small torrent catchments and in mountain rivers.

You will develop methods for integral hazard assessment and protective measures for practitioners. You conduct innovative research on the influence of extreme events and climate change on geomorphological torrent processes.

You will work closely with other WSL experts in the field of climate, runoff formation and debris flows and can draw on WSL's long-term measurement data series.

You will publish your results in journals and share them with external clients and partners. Advising practitioners and authorities on implementation issues is an important part of your job. Finally, you will also be involved in the supervision, teaching and continuing education of students and professionals.


You have a doctorate in natural or geosciences, or civil or environmental engineering with a high level of expertise in the field of torrent processes and bedload transport.

You have already worked together with experts and authorities responsible for natural hazards. In addition, you show interest and ideally experience in teaching and student supervision. You are used to interdisciplinary and practice-oriented cooperation and communicate at least in one of Switzerland's national languages.

You are a self-reliant, motivated and team-oriented person and want to engage long term for a safe and sustainable management of torrent hazards.
