Postdoctoral Position - Batteries for Emergency Operation at City Scale:

80%-100%, Zurich, fixed-term:

PSL is currently searching for a postdoctoral researcher to lead the project "Batteries for Emergency Operation at City Scale" which is an effort within the NCCR Automation (nccr-).

This is a collaboration with a local utility and the goal is to integrate batteries of the size of 3MW/3MWh into the operation of the electrical grid serving about 5000 customers in such a way that the grid could be operated autonomously for a short time in case of a blackout of the grid above but the battery should also be put to use in normal operation.

Job description:

The work involves carrying out own research on the optimal integration of the batteries into the system but also the supervision and coordination of master students who carry out their theses within this project (additionally also conference or journal publications are welcome) and the realization and implementation of these approaches together with the utility.

Communication internally and externally is also part of your tasks.

Your profile:

  • Background in power systems operation and control
  • Interested in implementing in a real system (with support from the utility)
  • Capability to advise and coordinate the work of multiple MSc students
  • Good communicator

We offer:

This is an opportunity to work on a project with real-world impact with a highly motivated industry partner. It also provides the opportunity to develop leadership skills and gain project management experience.

As the project is part of the NCCR Automation, you will be part of the NCCR Automation community and have the opportunity to participate in ongoing activities within the center.
