Beschreibung

EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, is one of the most dynamic university campuses in Europe and ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide.

The EPFL employs more than 6,000 people supporting the three main missions of the institutions:
education, research and innovation.

The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of more than 16,000 people, including over 12,000 students and 4,000 researchers from more than 120 different countries.

Post-doctoral position in Glucose metabolism in brains cells upon ketogenic diet (W/M):

Your mission:

The aim of the EPFL Blue Brain Project (BBP), a Swiss brain research initiative founded and directed by Professor Henry Markram, is to establish simulation neuroscience as a complementary approach alongside experimental, theoretical and clinical neuroscience to understanding the brain, by building the world's first biologically detailed digital reconstructions and simulations of the mouse brain.

  • The position:
-
Glucose metabolism in brain cells Postdoctoral Scholar W/M is open to reinforce the Membrane Systems team.

  • Ketogenic diet is a lowcarb high fat diet that is emerging as an efficient therapy for some neurological disorders (epilepsy, Alzheimer, depression). Exploring the effect of ketogenic diet on brain metabolism would help to understand the metabolism of a healthy brain. We have established and validated an inhouse model of ketogenic diet in mouse; the goal is to measure the concentration of key molecules involved in brain metabolism (glucose, glycogen, lactate, pyruvate.), in the brain tissues as well as in specialized cell populations such as neurons and astrocytes. Additional analysis of protein expression, glycosylation profiling will be also planned.

Main duties and responsibilities include:

The applicant will work under the supervision of 2 post-doctoral fellows and will participate in the main following tasks:

  • Isolate neurons and astrocytes from brains of mice that have been fed with different diets (the applicant will not have to necessarily do the brain collection).
  • Measure the concentration of a set of molecules in total tissues or in isolated neurons and astrocytes, using commercial detection kit (luminescence or fluorescence techniques) or by mass spectrometry. Additional techniques or procedures will have to be developed and optimized by the applicant if necessary.
  • Perform some proteins analysis by western blot.

Your profile:

  • The applicant should have strong experience in regular bench work in biochemistry and be adaptable to any new techniques.
  • The applicant should show clear interest for the project and be proactive in experimental planning and design.
  • A very good organization and data documentation is compulsory.
  • Knowledge in brain metabolism would be preferable but not mandatory.
  • Module 1 Accreditation for animal experimentation would be a plus.

We offer:

  • A worldrecognized leader in simulationbased research in neuroscience
  • A dynamic, multidisciplinary, international and collaborative working environment committed to benefitting the global community
  • A modern working environment, based at the Biotech Campus in Geneva Sécheron
