Postdoctoral Researcher in Learning and Perception for Autonomous Robot Navigation with Personal Mobility Devices:

80%-100%, Zurich, fixed-term:

We are looking for creative and highly motivated researchers to join our team at the
Spinal Cord Injury Artificial Intelligence - SCAI Lab
at ETH Zurich.

This position is open for a postdoctoral researcher in the field of computer vision and perception for autonomous robot navigation in complex environments.

**The focus of this work will be on achieving fast and efficient embedded scene understanding for navigation with a highly dynamic mobility device in collaboration with a swiss startup.

Apart from actively shaping our group's research, the positions include international collaborations with academia and industry, and mentoring MSc, and PhD students.

Dr Diego Paez-Granados in collaboration with Prof. Robert Riener (SMS Lab) will supervise the successful researcher
.
The position is fully funded for 2 years

Ideal starting date:

April 2023
(or shortly thereafter).

Project background:

Autonomous navigation in highly populated areas remains a challenging task for robots because of the difficulty in guaranteeing safe interactions with pedestrians in unstructured situations.

Application in personal mobility such as wheelchair navigation is especially important for safety and removing the cognitive load of the users from obstacle avoidance, allowing them to focus on higher-level planning.

Job description:

The goal of this project is to leverage advanced
real-time sensor fusion and a novel personal mobility device with holonomic capabilities to achieve highly reactive shared control at different levels of autonomy.

You will be responsible to lead a team of researchers investigating the most efficient methods for sensor data fusion, training new algorithms for improving state-of-the-art scene understanding and tracking for accurate navigation in complex scenarios.

Your profile:

  • You have outstanding experience in Mechatronics systems, and control with a PhD degree from a university in Computer Science, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields, with a proven track record in
robot navigation control (preferred experience with
deep learning optimization for onboard sensing).
  • Highly motivated, selfdriven, and shows excellent performance.
  • You have firstrate oral and written English skills and an interest in writing are required.
  • Adaptable and flexible to the continuous changes associated with research demands.
  • Strong robotics experience (ROS preferred) for mobile systems, either in navigation, localization or control (preferred)
  • Confirmed publication on some of the methodological areas of interest
: multisensing fusion, time series modelling, or computer vision.
  • Strong practical skills in
    testing robotic systems
:

  • Strong experience with good coding practices (review processes) in
    C/C++/C# and
    Python
:

  • Experience in physicsbased robot simulation (bullet or mujoco)
  • Optional

We offer:

To become part of an ambitious, research team offering an outstanding research environment, full access to extensive facilities and great team spirit in close collaboration with international academia and industrial partners.

We offer a
full-time research position (100%) with a competitive salary in accordance with ETH standards.

Work location is estimated to be 80% of the time at ETH Zurich, and 20% at our industrial partner (Zurich), with flexibility for remote work possible.
