Department of Chemistry_

PhD student position in protein (bio)chemistry & NMR spectroscopy

80 % :

A PhD student position is available in the group of Oliver Zerbe at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Zurich.

The project is a collaborative effort with the group of Nina Hartrampf (UZH) and Linda Penn (University of Toronto) as part of a four-year funded SINERGIA grant on Myc biology.

Myc is an important, much studied oncogene. Here we are investigating how Myc-phosphorylations will influence binding of Myc to its interactors.

To this end fragments of Myc containing specific Phosphoserines or Phosphotyrosines are made by automated flow protein synthesis in the Hartrampf group.

The Zerbe group will recombinantly produce complementary fragments of Myc and ligate them to the synthetic fragments. Activity assays are then performed in either the Hartrampf or Penn labs. Conformational preferences and binding interactions are studied in our group by solution NMR.

Students, however, are expected to tightly interact and share time within the two UZH-based groups, and meetings with the Toronto team are scheduled.

Your responsibilities:

In collaboration with an experienced Postdoc you will develop strategies for expression and purification of Myc, Myc-fragments as well as their interaction partners.

You will study these proteins by NMR and other biophysical techniques. This is expected to be a challenging and highly interdisciplinary project.

What we offer:

This advertisement presents an exciting PhD student position in an inspiring and challenging environment at the interface of chemistry and biology.

We offer a stimulating environment, a friendly atmosphere, access to modern labs and cutting edge NMR spectrometers including a 1.2 GHz instrument.

You will be working on a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary project of pivotal biological relevance, and produce results of high impact for a large audience of interested readers.
