Position Summary


The role of the Country Medical Director, Switzerland is to provide leadership to the Medical Affairs teams, and work in strategic partnership with Commercial teams, and ensure appropriate Medical Governance.

As a member of the Switzerland management team, this role is expected to provide insights to the business, contribute to the LOC leadership and identify and mitigate risks & manage issues.


The role reports to the Vice President, Head of Medical Affairs, Northern and Western Europe, has a dotted line to the General Manager, Switzerland, and leads a team of 32 medical affairs professionals, including pharmacovigilance.

Key Responsibilities in Detail

  • To ensure appropriate leadership and input to the development and execution of Medical strategies and operational plans with outstanding external engagement plans that are aligned with the business strategies and priorities.
  • To provide Medical leadership and ownership for systematic analysis and strategic planning of local evidence generation (including but not limited to, supporting ISSs/SCS/GSS & Real world evidence), evidence dissemination, scientific exchange, input to HTA & payer submissions and building trusted scientific partnerships with the external scientific communities.
  • To ensure appropriate resources and capabilities are available in the LOC, in collaboration with the GM, to meet and execute essential requirements for Medical Affairs and governance functions and to enable successful external engagements by Medical and delivery of the strategic plans aligned to the organizational priorities.
  • To lead the Switzerland Medical Governance Board, to ensure a robust governance framework is in place, and that the highest standards of Medical Governance are being practiced within the LOC.
  • To provide input to appropriate risk management strategies for the LOC, and ensuring appropriate representation /spokesperson for Medical in local crisis management, as well as ensures representation in local MGBs, RMCB and other appropriate Governance bodies
  • To ensure adequate systems and processes for Pharmacovigilance are in place in the LOC, to comply with local regulations and GSK global Pharmacovigilance requirements. PRP tasks will be performed by the NSC/ designee.
  • Operational delivery of LOC Medical governance tasks, e.g. local promotion sign offs, may be delegated to the respective Medical governance managers and their teams.
  • Participation in the Swiss Management Team, Swiss Leadership Team, Swiss Medical Governance Committee (Chair), Swiss Red Flag Committee and the Northern & Western Area Medical Leadership team.
Job Purpose

  • To provide overall medical leadership for the Swiss LOC, be a strategic partner to the Commercial team, and to ensure successful delivery of our Ahead Together ambition and strategies for Medical across Switzerland.
  • To further embed the medical value proposition into the Swiss medical organization and to drive a culture of focus, singlepoint accountable decisionmaking, smart risktaking, developing outstanding people and high performance in the Medical teams.
  • To provide Medical leadership and accountability for all scientific/medical engagement activities conducted in Switzerland and to ensure these are in line with the medical priorities and GSK's standards and values.
  • Overall accountability for Medical governance in Switzerland.
  • To drive aligned crossfunctional collaboration at local and abovecountry level alike. Partnership & collaboration with Commercial and other crossfunctional teams to ensure Medical insights contribute effectively to the successful launch of new products, appropriate communication of scientific evidence to HCPs, and appropriate promotion of our medicines, ensuring at all times that the patients' interests remain at the forefront of all activities.
  • Accountable for the operational delivery of key Medical Performance deliverables, tracking & driving Medical performance measures.
  • To ensure there is an effective medical capability development, talent development and succession planning process in place for all key Medical roles in the LOC.
  • Physician (MD or equivalent) with any specialism.
  • Experience in execution at country and abovecountry Medical Affairs Leadership roles.
  • Experience with the life science market and health care infrastructure in Switzerland.
  • Experience with successful product launches
  • Track record of building and driving high performing teams
  • Experience of developing talent
  • Excellent presentation, influencing and media skills for both internal and external audiences.
