Introduction:

UNIL is a leading international teaching and research institution, with over 5,000 employees and 17,000 students split between its Dorigny campus, CHUV and Epalinges.

As an employer, UNIL encourages excellence, individual recognition and responsibility.

Presentation:

We are seeking a full-time Laboratory manager and technician to support the Environmental Fluid Mechanics laboratory, led by Pietro de Anna, and the Rock Physics laboratory, led by Beatriz Quintal, at the Institute of Earth Science (University of Lausanne, Switzerland).

Faculty of geosciences and environment.

Job information:

Your responsibilities:

1) Prepare and execute experiments to support laboratory activities.

These include, microfluidics fabrication (in clean room), microbial samples preparation (growth and stocks), preparation and execution of forced oscillation experiments using a triaxial press, calibration and modification of new experimental setups.

2) Support and training of laboratory users.
3)

Contribute to administrative laboratory management:
administrative laboratory management and orders of consumables and equipment.

4)

Equipment maintenance:
ensuring the correct functioning of equipment
(i.e. automated microscopes, tri-axial press, forced-oscillation setup, pumps, pressure controllers).

Your qualifications:

Master degree in Physics, Geophysics, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.

Experience of 2-3 years in at least one of the following: i) microfluidics (use and fabrication), ii) experimental rock deformation (particular focus on forced oscillations to measure attenuation in fluid-saturated rock).

A basic knowledge in computer programming is required. Some experience on experimental fluid mechanics is desired, but not necessary (advanced training can be provided). Excellent written and oral English is required, working knowledge of French is required. Commitment to manage and support two laboratories devoted to develop novel experimental methodologies.

What the position offers you:

The host facility The Environmental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory is an established facility, located at the Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTE) at the University of Lausanne, equipped with state-of-the-art technology including fully automated microscopes (fluorescence and confocal microscopy), dedicated clean room for micro-fabrication, Z-sizer for colloids suspensions characterization and a microbiology laboratory.

The Rock Physics laboratory is a new facility at the Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTE), University of Lausanne, equipped mainly with a triaxial press that has been setup to investigate the hydro-mechanical behavior of fluid-saturated porous samples, with a focus on performing forced oscillation measurements of frequencydependent attenuation and the corresponding stiffness coefficients.

The University of Lausanne shares the campus with EPFL, within a very dynamical and stimulating environment.

We offer a nice working place in a multicultural, diverse and dynamic academic environment. Opportunities for professional training, a lot of activities and other benefits to discover.

22/04/2024 at 17h (Lausanne time zone).

We thank you for your understanding.
