Job Description:

Introduction
Are you an enthusiastic electromechanical technician looking to acquire RF power experience whilst working on complex RF problematics? Take Part

You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators.

The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes.

You will be working with the Amplifiers & Couplers section of the Radio Frequency Group.

The team is responsible for the design, operation and maintenance of large RF power plants and related infrastructure, and we are designing the amplifiers of the future

We are working with power systems producing between 20 kW and 2 MW of RF power in the frequency range of 100 to 800 MHz.

Employed amplifier technologies include solid state, tetrodes and IOT (Inductive Output Tubes).

We also design, construct and test the RF power lines and the RF power couplers that enables the amplifiers to feed the accelerating cavities.

Functions
The electromechanical technician takes part in the design of major electromechanical components for infrastructure and systems. You will have the technical supervision of electromechanical equipment.

You will be involved in producing, installing, commissioning, operating and maintaining these components, notably those required for the accelerator complex.

As an electromechanical technician in the Amplifiers and Couplers section, you will be part of a team working on RF power amplifiers and RF couplers with the responsibility for:

  • Design:
  • Designing or contributing to the design of electromechanical components of complex technical systems and producing drawings (integration, assembly and detailed drawings), defining the layout of services (e.g. piping) and the layout/routing of cables and circuits, assisting in the selection of components, determining technical characteristics;
  • Providing feedback for and participating actively in upgrade studies and equipment consolidation;
  • Preparing the relevant documentation;
  • Manufacture and installation:
  • Constructing or supervising the construction of electromechanical components, including prototypes;
  • Carrying out or supervising the installation of electromechanical components;
  • Seeking new construction techniques and ways of using new materials/components;
  • Tests and commissioning:
  • Designing test apparatus to be used for the commissioning of complex equipment;
  • Defining and implementing appropriate instrumentation systems;
  • Carrying out or supervising tests, interpreting and reporting on results;
  • Operation, maintenance and consolidation:
  • Carrying out or planning, organising and directing the operation, maintenance, repair, testing and modification of major systems or equipment;
  • Faultfinding and elaborating repair solutions;
  • Compiling the related documentation;
  • Participating in the oncall service;
  • Coordination:
  • Drawing up estimates, monitoring prices (in accordance with the terms of the frame contracts);
  • Placing orders with external contractors;
  • Supervising or coordinating manufacturing, tests and installation activities;
  • Distributing and implementing the project schedule in cooperation with various direct colleagues or contractors, and coordinating teams;
  • Monitoring the progress of work and controlling quality and budget;
  • Making sure that all necessary safety measures are taken on work sites;
  • Preparing and carrying out acceptance tests, checking contractors' documentation and checking measurements prior to final payment;

Qualifications:

Technical certificate or general secondary education or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electromechanical engineering or a related field.

Experience:

Required experience:
Initial hands-on experience with electromechanical equipment.

Desired experience:

  • Experience with operating highpower RF component;
  • Experience with operating and maintaining RF systems;
  • Experience with electronic devices testing;

Technical competencies:

  • Operation and maintenance of RF components and systems;
  • Construction, test and installation of electromechanical equipment and systems;
  • Operation and maintenance of electromechanical equipment and systems;
  • Testing and measurement of analog electronic circuits.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Working in teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities; supporting and acting in accordance with team decisions; accepting joint responsibility for team successes and shortcomings.
  • Solving problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them; producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements.
  • Working in the interest of the Organization: behaving consistently with CERN's values and goals Demonstrating motivation
