Mapping exercise of the CSO landscape, of human rights defender organizations, including women human rights defenders networks, women-led and youth-led organizations, and formal and informal protection networks in the identified countries.

Responsibilities:


  • Inception report outlining a detailed work plan and timeframe for the delivery (first two weeks of the contract). This should include a 1page analytical note.
  • Conduct a mapping exercise of the CSO landscape, human rights defender organizations, including women human rights defenders networks, womenled and youthled organizations, and formal and informal protection networks within OHCHR-EARO's priority countries: Djibouti, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
  • Provide an analysis of the civic space situation, including access to information, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to peaceful assembly and association, the right to privacy, and hate speech and incitement and the existence of any legal/bureaucratic barriers to the registration of CSOs.
  • Develop a list of organizations working on monitoring, documentation, reporting, and advocacy of human rights violations, on women's rights and gender equality, and on the rights of youths in the identified OHCHR-EARO's priority countries. The list will have to incorporate details on the scope of work of these organizations and contact information.

Information will include as a minimum:

the name; type (i.e., community-based organization, national, international, faith-based, NGO, informal, etc.); contacts; main roles, areas of action, and functions (advocacy, research, monitoring, reporting, etc.


  • Submit weekly progress reports on the work and attend weekly meetings with the Human Rights Officer, Regional Engagements Technical Lead.
Qualifications/special skills

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in international law (human rights and humanitarian law), political science, and international relations.

A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in social sciences, human rights, international development, communications, or related field.

Experience in research and mapping exercises. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite/Excel required. Experience in database development and management is desirable. Prior experience working with human rights and East and Horn of Africa Human Rights organizations is desirable. Demonstrated planning and organizational skills as well as interpersonal skills.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of French is highly desirable.
