Organization's Overview
Established in 1946, the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) is a global nonprofit organization working for a stronger and more effective United Nations.
The mandate of WFUNA is to build a better world by reinforcing and improving the United Nations, spreading the values of the UN Charter and strengthening its network.
Position summary
The Secretary-General is the chief executive Officer of WFUNA.
He/she organizes the work of the Secretariat and conducts all everyday activities of the Organization in accordance with his/her mandate and reports to the main organs of WFUNA as defined by the Constitution of the Organization.
In his/her executive role, the Secretary-General of WFUNA, supervises all the staff of the Secretariat, is responsible for all programs and activities in accordance with the mandate of WFUNA, is responsible for financial management and reporting, conducts or supervises fundraising efforts as well as public relations.
Geographic location
The Secretary-General of WFUNA must conduct his/her work from one of the two main offices of the Federation: New York or Geneva.
Overview of Responsibilities
Main responsibilities:
- Coordinate, oversee and expand WFUNA's programs (Global citizen education, capacity building, youth empowerment, model UN, etc.);
- Coordinate, oversee and expand WFUNA advocacy and policy initiatives
- Lead the fundraising efforts of WFUNA
- Maintain contacts and develop relations with a variety of stakeholders (UN, States, CSOs, Academia, private sector)
- Report to the WFUNA Executive Committee and on a triennial basis to the WFUNA Plenary Assembly
- Maintain, coordinate and expand the network of UNAs around the world
- Represent WFUNA and coordinate WFUNA's representation in various forums, meetings and events
- Be responsible for the Human Resources and Financial Management of WFUNA
Required Past Experience
Preferred fields of experience:
non-profits, diplomacy-international relations, administration.
A minimum of 5 years in:
- Demonstrated experience in management, oversight, and development of a team of international professional staff.
- Extensive experience in a leadership position with a nongovernmental organization
- Work with the United Nations or for a memberState of the United Nations, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), or international civil society organization
- Demonstrated involvement with and knowledge of UNAs or their chapters
- Demonstrated work in multilateral environment including involvement (including drafting of position papers, involvement in negotiations, etc.)
- Experience in recruiting and managing personnel
- Experience in some of the areas covered by the WFUNA programs and activities listed above
- Demonstrated experience in financial management of an Organization (including financial reports, budget development, project financial reporting)
Required qualifications
- Hold at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited university
- Fluency in the 2 working languages of WFUNA (English required; and French preferably)
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the United Nations (history, values, organization, functioning)
- Demonstrated general knowledge of international relations and UN memberStates main policies, alliances, affinities
- Demonstrated understanding of requirements and procedures related to the management of a nonprofit organization
- Ability and willingness to travel approximately 45 months per year
- Strong command of MS Office as well as an accounting software (preferably QuickBooks)

Contract details:
- Fulltime, inperson presence, indeterminate duration of contract, evaluated every three years (reviewed by WFUNA Executive Committee)
- The Secretary-General of WFUNA must conduct his/her work from one of the two main offices of the Federation: New York or Geneva
- Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
