Installed in his/her computer the latest version of the Microsoft Windows operating system, software and security updates as soon as they are issued.


  • Enabled the builtin software firewall that comes with the operating software of the computer.
  • Be able to use the password manager enabling the creation of strong passwords and to secure access to all UNCTAD/UN/related resources.


This position is in the Commodity Research and Analysis Section, of the Commodities Branch, Division on International Trade and Commodities, UNCTAD.

The duration is an initial period of two months with the possibility of extension up to four months. The starting date will be January 2024.


Responsibilities:

The Commodity Research and Analysis Section carries out research activities aimed at supporting commodity dependent developing countries in fostering structural transformation through economic diversification, thus helping them to make progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 1,2,7,8,9, 12 and 13.

The focus of this internship will be to assist the section in its work to undertake research and analysis for the "Commodities and Development Report".

Tasks during the internship may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in compiling information and data on issues relating to production of and trade in commodities, including research on the interactions between commodities and economic diversification; and identify their implications for development.
  • Assist in quantitative and qualitative background research for the report.
  • Prepare short drafts on specific issues as indicated by the supervisors, including development of charts, graphs.
  • Provide substantive support to the preparation of relevant documents (e.g. presentations, project documents and management of projects) as required by the abovementioned activities.
  • Assist with proof reading and editing publications.
  • Support other activities of the Section as required.


Training and mentoring will be provided all along the internship by the supervisor (s) and team of colleagues in the Office.

Carrying out his/her tasks under the guidance and supervision of a supervisor, duties include:


  • Participation in online meetings with the supervisor and team.
  • Assist in compiling information and data on trade and commodities related to commodity dependency.
  • Assist in quantitative and qualitative background research.
  • Prepare short drafts on specific issues as indicated by the supervisors, including development of charts, graphs.
  • Provide substantive support to the preparation of relevant documents (e.g. presentations, project documents and management of projects) as required by the abovementioned activities.
  • Assist with proof reading and editing publications.
  • Support other activities of the Section as required.

More generally, interns shall:

  • Observe all applicable rules, regulations, instructions, procedures and directives of the Organization notwithstanding their status as described in section 4 of the UN Internship Programme Administrative Instructions ST/AI/2000/9 & ST/AI/2005/11.
  • Provide the receiving departments/offices with a copy of all materials prepared by them during the internship. The UN shall be entitled to all property rights, including but not limited to patents, copyrights and trademarks, with regard to material which bears a direct relation to or is made in consequence of, the services provided under the internship. At the request of the UN, the interns shall assist in securing such property rights and transferring them to the UN in compliance with the requirements of the applicable law.
  • Respect the impartiality and independence required of the UN and of the receiving department/office and shall not seek or accept instructions regarding the services performed under the internship agreement from any Government or from any authority external to the UN;
  • Refrain from any conduct that would adversely reflect on the UN or on the receiving department/office and will not engage in any activity which is incompatible with the aims and objectives of the UN.
