Overview:

Position Profile:

Jazz Pharmaceuticals is a global biopharmaceutical company focused on improving patients' lives by identifying, developing and commercializing meaningful products that address unmet medical needs.


Reporting to the Country Manager Switzerland and Austria, the Medical Director is responsible for the development and delivery of the Swiss and Austrian Medical Affairs strategy and programs that support the successful commercialization of in-market and future Jazz Pharmaceuticals products.

The Medical Director will lead the Medical Affairs department and be positioned as the Medical Lead to both internal and external customers.

Currently, Jazz Pharmaceuticals in Switzerland & Austria is focusing on two rapidly growing therapeutic areas:
Hematology/Oncology and Neuroscience.


The role will demand strong leadership qualities, high levels of cross-functional collaboration and the ability to influence across all levels of the organization.

The incumbent will need to balance the requirement for strong strategic thinking with a need to execute in a fast moving organization.


The incumbent is responsible for ensuring all activities are executed in accordance with regulatory and legal frameworks including but not limited to GCP, IFPMA, EFPIA, and local Swiss and Austrian regulations as well as Jazz Pharmaceuticals Policies and Healthcare compliance procedures.


Essential Functions

Leadership of Medical Affairs Department

  • Lead, develop and build a high performing, fully integrated Medical Affairs Department
  • Manage, coach and develop Medical Affairs personnel and MSLs
  • Role model and exemplify Jazz Cultural values

Strategic and Tactical Planning

  • Ensure development and delivery of the Swiss and Austrian Medical Affairs strategy and country plan
  • Set SMART objectives and track, measure and report progress of plans and budgets
  • Ensure the needs of the Swiss and Austrian market are effectively communicated to partners in the EUR/INT organization and ensure alignment of local Medical Affairs strategy with the EUR/INT strategy

Systems, Processes and Ways of Working

  • Ensure systems, processes and ways of working are in place to facilitate:
  • Effective execution of country medical plans
  • Expert scientific knowledge of all Medical Affairs team members
  • Effective Key Account Planning with cross functional partners
  • Effective planning and utilization of Key External Experts (KEEs)
  • Data generation activities including Investigator Research
  • Appropriate positioning of Jazz Pharmaceutical medicines in medical guidelines
  • High standards with regards to PV, compliance and SOPs
  • Review and approval of medical and marketing materials and activities in line with national regulations
  • Delivery of quality medical information to internal and external customers

External Relationships

  • Develop influential relationships with national, regional and global KEEs
  • Attend appropriate scientific congresses to stay abreast of developments and to support national, regional and global KEEs activities
  • Support development of Jazz positioning as the scientific authority on Hematology/Oncology as well as Neuroscience and support national, regional and global KEE advocacy through provision of scientific and clinical information via the MSL team

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Minimum of 5 years Pharmaceutical Industry experience, ideally in a comparable role with experience of managing teams
  • Good understanding of the Swiss and Austrian healthcare systems. Knowledge of the Swiss and Austrian market and pharmaceutical codes
  • Experience of launching new products; disease awareness, market shaping and launch readiness activities are a distinct advantage
  • Experience or capability to manage real world evidence data generation projects and local Swiss & Austrian Phase III / IV clinical trials, and IST's
  • Experience in establishing strong influential relationships with academic societies
  • Strong leadership skills with demonstrable ability to influence at all levels of the organization as well as with external customers
  • In addition to German fluent knowledge of English and French language (spoken and written)
  • Excellent communication skills, including strong presentation skills
  • Flexible, independent, and proactive working style
  • Selfstarter, hands on mentality and able to work in a team
  • Willingness to travel frequently
  • Excellent work ethic
  • Proficiency in computer skills
  • Produce timely business management reports, budget tracking and audit data

Required/Preferred Education and Licenses

  • A Medical degree (preferred) or a Scientific Graduate with a higher qualification (e.g. PhD, Pharm D, MSc etc.)
  • Hematology/Oncology and/or Neuroscience experience are of distinct advantage
  • Rare disease experience is desirable
