Disease Modelling Scientist URA
Our client is a pioneer in Drug Discovery and Development and one of the frontrunners in Personalised Healthcare.

As the world's largest R&D spender in the pharmaceutical and diagnostics domain, they work in a vast number of drug discovery & therapeutic areas and are highly recognized internationally.

This role is in Predictive Modeling and Data Analytics team where Disease Modeling is a primary focus area.

Your work will focus on leading the modeling strategy to support the development of a modeling platform for
Oncology biomarker research in the area of cancer immunotherapy.

Specifically, you will lead the implementation and testing of different parameter inference techniques to assess model robustness and parameter inference confidence.

Key techniques include population hierarchical modeling approaches. This is initially a
12 months contract role to be based in
Basel area with good chances of extension.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Implement parameter inference techniques using the existing model of tumor and immune cells temporal dynamics. Key techniques include hierarchical modeling approaches and variational Bayes inference
  • Develop a strategy to assess robustness and validity of the developed predictive models
  • Lead the further development of the mathematical model with system pharmacology, PK/PD, statistical or machine learning models that can integrate preclinical/clinical data and knowledge on pathophysiological mechanisms, patient characteristics and drug pharmacology
  • Communicate the outcome of the work performed to the project teams to support efficient discussion and decision making
  • Interact on a scientific level with partners in project team(s) with regards to all aspects of the work performed and ensure high quality reporting of results into internal and external project documents (e.g. Clinical Development Plan, Health Authorities briefing books, Scientific publication)

Qualifications and Experience:

-
Relevant Swiss working/residency permit or Swiss/EU-Citizenship required;

  • MSc or PhD applied to life sciences in the fields of engineering, mathematical modeling, computational biology, biophysics, applied mathematics, machine learning or biostatistics;
  • First handson experience in disease modeling
  • Strong data analysis and data science skills
  • Strong analytical skills, with ability to understand and develop mathematical/statistical methods and to translate them into a computational algorithm;
  • Strong computational and coding skills and proficiency in at least one high level scientific language (such as R/MATLAB/Julia/Python)
  • Good communication and writing skills in English as well as a proven track record of publishing in peer reviewed journals
  • Flexibility and capability to work independently
  • Strategic mindset and understanding of how and when modeling and simulation can contribute value in drug
- development and support decision making.

  • Ability to influence and lead without authority in a network organization
  • Able to radically simplify and prioritize for impact. You invest your time in things that accelerate progress for patients.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with hierarchical modeling and population approach (e.g. nonlinear mixed effect models, Bayesian hierarchical models) and M&S software (e.g. NONMEM, Monolix, nlmixr, Pumas-AI, Stan);
  • Experience in exploratory data analysis and machine learning methods (e.g. regression, classification, dimensionality reduction, ensemble methods, neural nets and deep learning) ;
  • Background in pharmacology, life sciences or medicine with a clear interest in clinical research and in developing deep understanding of disease biology;
