Installed in his/her computer the latest version of the Microsoft Windows operating system, software and security updates as soon as they are issued.


  • Enabled the builtin software firewall that comes with the operating software of the computer.
  • Be able to use the password manager enabling the creation of strong passwords and to secure access to all UNCTAD/UN/related resources.
This position is in the Trade Facilitation Section (TFS), Trade Logistics Branch (TLB), Division on Technology and Logistics. The duration is an initial period of two months with the possibility of extension up to six months. The starting date will be 1 September 2023 or soon after.


Responsibilities:

The Trade Facilitation Section carries out research and technical assistance activities aimed at promoting and building capacity in trade facilitation focusing on improving cross-border clearance efficiency and performance and trade growth and sustainability for development, especially in the context of developing countries.


The focus of this internship will be to assist the section in its work to undertake research and analysis and related technical assistance projects.


Training and mentoring will be provided all along the internship by the supervisor (s) and team of colleagues in the Office.

Carrying out his/her tasks under the guidance and supervision of a supervisor, duties include:


  • Participation in online meetings with the supervisor and team.
  • Undertake research and drafting related to Trade Facilitation reform challenges, National Trade Facilitation Committees contributation in the implementation of international agreements and/or UNCTAD products/ tools in facilitating national trade facilitation reforms.
  • Attend, service, and summarize conferences, webinars and meetings related to Trade Facilitation.
  • Assist the TFS team in the preparation and standardisation of material for training modules of the UNCTAD Empowerment programme for National Trade Facilitation Committees (NTFCs).
  • Assist in preparing digital and paperbased products (such as brochures, presentations, articles, etc) for promoting the Empowerment programme.
  • Assist and contribute the inperson and online workshops, starting from backstopping the prepatory work, orgnization, and delivery, up to the final assesment and reporting after the completion of the workshops.
  • Attend and summarize meetings and conduct research related to facilitating transit coordination in and among developing countries.
  • Attend and summarize meetings and conduct research exploring the role of communication in eleviating the transparency and indispensability of national trade facilitation committees in national trade policies.
  • Prepare short drafts on specific issues as indicated by the supervisors, including development of charts, graphs.
  • Provide substantive support to the preparation of relevant documents (e.g. presentations, project documents and management of projects) as required by the abovementioned activities.
  • Support other activities of the Section as required.

More generally, interns shall:

  • Observe all applicable rules, regulations, instructions, procedures and directives of the Organization notwithstanding their status as described in section 4 of the UN Internship Programme Administrative Instructions ST/AI/2000/9 & ST/AI/2005/11.
  • Provide the receiving departments/offices with a copy of all materials prepared by them during the internship. The UN shall be entitled to all property rights, including but not limited to patents, copyrights and trademarks, with regard to material which bears a direct relation to or is made in consequence of, the services provided under the internship. At the request of the UN, the interns shall assist in securing such property rights and transferring them to the UN in compliance with the requirements of the applicable law.
  • Respect the impartiality and independence required of the UN and of the receiving department/office and shall not seek or accept instructions regarding the services performed under the internship agreement from any Government or from any authority external to the UN;
  • Refrain from any conduct that would adversely reflect on the UN or on the receiving department/office and will not engage in any activity which is incompatible with the aims and objectives of the UN.
