Beschreibung

The Experimental Animal Center (EAC) is the structural unit of the University of Bern carrying the responsibility for in-vivo research.

In its multispecies, decentralized animal facilities, the EAC aims at providing state of the art use and care of the animal programs.

The 3Rs (Reduce, Refine, Replace), the "culture of care" and compliance to guidelines and regulations are cornerstones of the EAC strategy.

Areas of responsibility


Breeding facility

  • Responsible for the mice colonies management
  • Oversight of the breeding of (WT and GM) in the SOPF breeding facility based on the user requirements in collaboration with the GMO manager
  • Maintains inventories of mouse colonies using PyRAT software
  • Gives guidance and advice to scientists, lab staff and animal caretkers on breeding strategies in order to maximize or optimize goals.

Cryobiology Unit

  • Supports the import of over 200 lines into the central breeding facility of the EAC (vivarium transfer)
  • Performs genome editing, electroporation, cryopreservation of gametes, cloning, chimeras, embryo transfer to foster mothers, microinjections
  • Uses their personal skills in stem cell and embryo manipulations to enable the above objectives.
  • Maintain appropriate electronic records for cryopreservation of sperm and embryos in Pyrat
  • Organisation of import and cryobiology processes (revitalisation, freezing, genetic integrity)
  • Oversees the daytoday operations and activites of the cryolab technician
  • Manage and administer a chargeback system for services and participate in choosing and purchasing equipment in the development

Compliance

  • Ensure regulatory compliance with university guidelines and Swiss regulations
  • Develop, review, and revise all related SOPs
The position reports to the GMO Manager


Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or relative field, desired
  • At least 3 years of working experience in cryo biology services
  • Practical experience in embryo / breeding techniques
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Initiative, goal oriented and excellent organizational skills, ambitious, stress resistant
  • Fluent in English and/or German, other languages are a plus
