This position is within the Operational Support Section (OSS) of the International Impartial and Independent Mechanism to Assist in the Investigation and Prosecution of Persons Responsible for the Most Serious Crimes under International Law Committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011 (IIIM), located in Geneva.

The position is under the general supervision of the Head of the OSS, IIIM.


Responsibilities:

Within delegated authority, the Interpreter will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Services up to seven meetings or interviews per week (exceptionally eight), usually of no more than three hours duration.
  • Provides interpretation into Arabic of speeches given in English and into English of speeches given in Arabic.
  • Routinely covers sensitive meetings.
  • Routinely functions as team leader of all interpreters assigned to a given meeting.
  • Supervises the work of interpreters/field language assistants.
  • Coordinates outsourcing of interpretation needs.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to junior interpreters.
  • Assists in the screening, training and examining of prospective freelance interpreters.
  • May function as Programming Officer.
  • May perform other related duties, as required.

Education

Work Experience
At least five years of professional interpreting experience in international organizations is required.

Relevant language experience within the UN System is desirable.

Experience in interpreting witness/victim interviews is desirable.

Experience interpreting in the criminal justice context is desirable.

- term duration for a period of 364 calendar days with possibility of extension, with an estimated start date as soon as possible.
