Position in Computational Genomics/Bioinformatics:

80%-100%, Zurich, fixed-term:

The laboratory of Neuroepigenetics at the Medical Faculty of UZH and the Department of Health Science and Technology (D-HEST) of ETHZ is looking for a bioinformatician to work on a project of multi-omics data analyses.

Project background:

Research in the Laboratory of Neuroepigenetics examines the epigenetic basis of complex brain functions and physiology in mammals and focuses in particular, on the mechanisms of epigenetic inheritance.

The goal is to determine the molecular and cellular processes underlying the influence of life experiences on mental and physical health across generations.

The research focuses on adverse experiences in early life and their link with psychiatric and metabolic disorders.

It uses animal models and cellular systems to study the involvement of non-coding RNAs, epigenetic factors and chromatin remodeling in the brain and germline, in the expression and transmission of environmentally-induced phenotypes.

The work demonstrated that early adversity in mice induces behavioral and metabolic alterations that are transmitted across up to 4 generations through the germline and is currently working on identifying the causative factors.

This research is conceptually and technically original, and the lab is a pioneer in the field of transgenerational epigenetic inheritance, a novel discipline at the forefront of a paradigm shift in genetics.

It is multidisciplinary and combines environmentally
- and genetically-modified animal models, -omics technologies, molecular and cell biology, epigenetic methods, behavioral testing and bioinformatics.

The lab is also conducting collaborative studies in trauma patients with clinicians in Europe and South Asia to assess the relevance of its findings for humans.

Job description:

We are looking for a collaborative and communicative young researcher with solid experience in bioinformatics applied to experimental biology.

You will contribute to computational parts of ongoing research projects and interact with group members to provide daily assistance, support and advice, and help analyse and interpret multi-omics datasets.

Multi-omics datasets include small/long transcriptome, DNA methylome, proteomics and metabolomics collected from a mouse model of early trauma.

Your profile:

  • You should have strong research interests and solid skills in bioinformatics, computational biology, statistical genomics, and/or animal genetics and epigenetics.
  • Additionally, experience in multiomics data analyses, the use of publicly available datasets and pipelines, programming in R/Python and in working in a highperformance computing environment is required.
  • Good command of machine learning approaches and knowledge of UNIXlike platforms and GitHub are an advantage.
  • Individuals with a background in biology are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • Individuals from bioinformatics, mathematics, computer science, biology, physics, or any relevant interdisciplinary background are welcome

:

  • Good skills in scientific writing and in oral presentations are required.
